In its most recent report, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stated in 1991 that more than 100,000 cases of facial trauma occurred in children younger than 14 while they participated in sports activities.
ORAL SURGICAL POST
OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

A certain amount of bleeding, pain, and swelling is normal. Reduce your activity as much as possible for several hours. Avoid eating, drinking, and unnecessary talking. Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for 24 hours. These activities may hinder formation of a blood clot, which is necessary for proper healing.

Bleeding – Immediately following procedure, keep steady pressure on the bleeding area by biting firmly on the gauze for at least 30 minutes. Pressure helps reduce bleeding and permits formation of a clot in the tooth socket. After 24 hrs. some oozing of blood may persist. If necessary resume biting on moist tea bags. Once bleeding has stopped, cautiously resume oral hygiene.

DO NOT rinse, spit, smoke or suck through a straw until the next morning. These activities may dislodge the blood clot, start bleeding, and delay healing. Keep tongue and fingers away from surgical area.

Pain – Normally, pain becomes less severe with each passing post-operative day, and some discomfort is to be expected. A prescription for pain pills may be provided for this. If severe pain persists or increases, call the office.

Swelling – This is a normal occurrence which can last up to 10 days. Immediately following procedure, apply an ice bag over the affected area. Use 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for 24 hrs to help prevent development of excessive swelling and discomfort.

Trismus – Difficulty in opening your mouth widely and discomfort upon swallowing should be anticipated.

Diet – Eat soft, nutritious food and drink plenty of liquids. Have what you wish, but be careful not to disturb the blood clot. Add solid foods to your diet as soon as you are comfortable to chew.

Stitches – will dissolve spontaneously in anywhere from 3 to 10 days.

Dentures – Do not remove the denture for at least 24 hrs. Rinse thoroughly with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide diluted with 50/50 water. Reinsert dentures immediately. It is best to check with the dentist or therapist who has made your denture before removing.

Oral Hygiene – Important - 24 hrs after surgery, rinse mouth gently with a solution of ½ teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of lukewarm water. Repeat rinsing after each meal or snack for several days. Rinsing is important because it removes food particles and debris from the socket area and thus helps prevent infection and promote healing.
